Lastly, these clouds! How dark and moody the shadow on their bottoms but how expressive they are! Touches of sienna and ultramarine really harmonize this painting.

Versfelt’s portraiture is inspiring as well. I am in awe of how well-observed the tones are in this painting. In any other context, this woman’s face is deep orange! Yet in this setting the face glows. Notice the subtle highlight on her nose.

Today I have 4 paintings to post from Dutch artist Hans Versfelt. Amazingly vibrant with tendencies toward tonalist and old-Dutch-masters style, Versfelt’s paintings are super inspiring. Even the most staid scenes are imbued with a sense of life and clarity despite the loose forms.
I especially like how Versfelt mixes shadows: in the above painting, Strandhuisje Op Zomerse Dag (2010), the interior of the maisonette could be a simple tan. Instead, there are shades of salmon, blue, grey, orange, and olive.

This is very nice. The top right four, especially.

Yesterday I ended my day with a walk around Chicago’s Millenium park and the Museum Campus. A favorite spot is the Laurie Garden across the street from the Modern Wing, where tall grasses are just waking from their dormant state and look especially beautiful against the blue-green glass of the Institute.
